Happy Spring !

April is Oral Cancer Awareness Month

It would probably surprise you to know that Oral Cancer is one of the deadliest forms of cancer out there. But it is also the one of the most curable. That stark and dire contrast is simply a matter of when the cancer is discovered.

Those who are diagnosed in the early stages of the disease do very well in treatment and recovery. But the sad truth is, a vast majority of oral cancer victims are diagnosed in the later stages, where long-term survival is less likely.  Statistics show that an American dies from Oral Cancer every hour.

There are certain risks factors that can dramatically increase the chances of Oral Cancer, including drinking and smoking regularly.

The VELscope system helps dental professionals visualize abnormalities in the mucosal tissues of your lips, mouth and upper throat. In just two minutes a painless VELscope examination lets us improve our assessment of your overall oral health.

We realize our commitment to your dental health goes beyond “pretty teeth and nice gums”.  That’s why we have always had a visual oral cancer screening incorporated in our regular exam.  About 6 years ago, we added the VELscope system to our exam. The VELscope's blue light "excites" molecules (called "fluorophores") deep within the layers of oral tissues. In turn, those fluorophores emit their own light (fluorescence), in shades of green, yellow and red. The VELscope's filter makes fluorescence visualization possible, by blocking reflected blue light, and by enhancing the contrast between normal and abnormal tissue.  It is a painless technique that helps find tissue abnormalities, including cancerous and precancerous lesions earlier.  The best way to help improve survival rates of oral cancers is early detection and treatment.

For more information on Oral Cancer, please visit The Oral Cancer Foundation's website.

Come visit Adams Dental at Healthy Kids Day at the Madison YMCA on Saturday, April 16th from 1:00-3:00pm. We will be offering free VELscope Oral Cancer Screenings to all adults in honor of Oral Cancer Awareness Month!

Don’t Forget your Mouthguard: Prevent Injuries in Youth

Statistics show that each year more than 3.5 million children, 14 years of age and younger suffer injuries while playing sports or participating in recreational activities, and many of these injuries involve the teeth, mouth and face.

Using any mouthguard for protection is step in the right direction. However, “off the shelf” mouthguards may be uncomfortable making it harder to breath easily and therefore being discarded or used less frequently. The dentist can custom build a mouthguard, fitted to your teeth and gums, providing maximum comfort and extra protection.

Call us to learn more about a custom-made sports mouthguard for your child.

Dr. Adams donated athletic mouthguards to the entire Oratory Prep Varsity Lacrosse Team...here is Dr. Adams taking impressions on her son Reilly!

Regular Exams Are Important

Because we are committed to preventing dental problems before they happen, we recommend that all of our patients see us at least every six months for a routine cleaning and examination.  Dental problems usually start out small but can quickly worsen to become much more serious.  These problems are much easier to treat—or better yet avoid—if they are caught early.

The key to avoiding serious dental problems—Regular checkups
During your regular checkups we examine the health of your mouth, measure the bone levels around your teeth, check for decay, screen for oral cancer, examine your dental work, evaluate your bite, and remove plaque and tartar from your teeth.  The bacteria that cause periodontal disease thrive in plaque and tartar, producing toxins that can cause bone loss and eventually tooth loss.  A toothbrush and floss are almost useless against tartar, so to keep it from building up we must remove it every six months in our office.

Your six month exam and cleaning is a critical part of a preventive strategy.  It is the best way for you to prevent advanced dental problems, and minimize the time and money you spend in the dental chair.

Call or email the office to schedule your bi-yearly check-up appointment today!
