Dr. Vegas Blog 9/29/2026 Why am I Here?

Dr. H.L. Greenberg

Yom Kippur is the Jewish Day of Atonement, a time for reflection, and repentance - it's also a food time to ask the age-old question, "Why am I Here?" Kol Nidre started the evening of our NSDDS Annual Meeting where I spoke earlier in the day about looking your best after an ablative procedure. In my Yom Kippur reflections, I was reminded of a thought-provoking podcast entitled, "Designing a life that Matters" from NPR's Hidden Brain series. If you don't have the time to listen about living a meaningful life, my big take home message was to enjoy the process without solely focusing on the outcome: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/hidden-brain/id1028908750?i=1000763898319

Michael Brooks was the first presenter at the first program of The Greenberg Center for Learning and Tolerance. "Religion and Public Life: Why Be Afraid?" at Colorado College October 18, 2006; Michael spoke because I asked for his help. As a University of Michigan Undergraduate I was fascinated by religion, and Michael was my, "Intro to World Religions" professor, where he taught the Judaism section. When asked, Michael opined that he could just as convincingly present on the importance of Islam or Christianity- his openness and inquisitive mind intrigued me and we became fast friends. Michael was also the Hillel Director at the University of Michigan- a kind soul, he taught me to engage with people by asking better questions like, "What do I need to know about you to treat you?" He wrote one of my letters of recommendation for medical school and his 11 Principles hang in my office. A principled man, Michael never went to a Michigan Football game because he didn't want to be in a stadium  with 110,000 people chanting Hail; he never took pictures however he allowed me to snap one a couple years back refusing to look into the camera. To this day, he is the only person with whom I've ever played racquetball and whenever I visited Ann Arbor, I would spend time with Michael. Our last encounter was in a memory care facility lock down unit; seeing my friend in those circumstances repetitively asking the same questions without realizing I'd already answered was heartbreaking. These last few years were rough for my brilliant friend, and he passed earlier this month. A Harvard educated professor, I miss his big heart, inquisitive mind and pointed insights.

Both Michael and my Father advised me to find the best professors and take their classes at Michigan. As a result, I took a thought provoking, "The Bible as Fiction" course from Golden Apply Teacher of the Year, English professor Ralph Williams who examined, critiqued and wove the Bible's stories (the Hebrew Bible and the Christian Foundational Writings) in fascinating ways requiring us to stop, listen and interpret the meaning behind every relationship and word choice- I can still see Professor Williams grab an idea from thin air and move it about his hand and say "Oh, Ho" as we Undergrads sat in wonder watching him stare transfixed into his own empty hand. Over the past few years, I have reengaged with lecturer and psychologist Dr. Jordan B. Peterson who, like Williams explores through his book, "We Who Wrestle with G-d", and his lecture series by the same name why are we here and what is a meaningful life (enjoy a listen here- https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/the-jordan-b-peterson-podcast/id1184022695?i=1000789355484). Lest you think asking, "why am I here?" is an exercise in futility, a 2019 JAMA article, demonstrated that if you have purpose, you will live longer https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/31125099/.

Lately, I've been interested in Post-Ablative Skin Care treatments, I spoke on the subject at our Nevada Dermatology Society Meeting in Vegas September 20, 2026 and also at The Vegas Cosmetic Surgery Meeting in May 2026. Wound healing is of particular interest to me because it is during the post-treatment period that we can most affect skin change and improve patient outcomes. It remains true that a great skin care regimen following a series of procedures like the, "Dr. Vegas 444" can help maximize your results and, "Looks Max" your skin. I'm looking forward to presenting on scar treatments and hair loss remedies at the DASIL meeting in Kochi, India October 2026, where I will learn the latest information and techniques from international colleagues.
