The Houston Medical Forum hosted its 29th Annual Scholarship Gala benefiting medical students in the greater Houston area and HMF educational programs.

This year's two Honorees were Dr. Joseph C. Gathe, Jr., who received the Houston Medical Forum's Lifetime Achievement Award, in recognition of his work in infectious disease specialty care and clinical research; and Dr. Carla F. Ortique, received the Physician of the Year award for her dedicated practice with women's healthcare issues and the elimination of racial and ethnic healthcare disparities. The #FuelGreatness Health Champion Award was presented to Dr. Tanya Mosley, for her work promoting sustainable nutrition and health in conjunction with her serving as a Professor at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center.

The Master of Ceremonies Khambrel Marshall of the KPRC 2 Severe Weather Team kept the program on point. Our Mayor, Sylvester Turner, presented a Proclamation of Houston Medical Forum Day and  served as the evenings keynote speaker. The theme of the Gala was "Celebrating Warriors of Medical Excellence" as inspired by the Movie "Black Panther".  

We are always elated to celebrate the Achievements of Dr. Joseph C. Gathe who grew up in the Third Ward, graduated from Strake Jesuit College Preparatory, went on to Baylor College of Medicine to obtain his M.D. degree and completed his Fellowship in Infectious Diseases at the Methodist Hospital in Houston. He continues to serve as an inspiration to achieve by helping others in the community.

Dr. Joseph Gathe, Jr., with childhood friends, Harold Mullins, Jr., Dr. Zeb F. Poindexter, III, and Edwin Harrison, Who all grew up in Third Ward of Houston, Texas.
